When the Waterfall Whispers Back

August arrived quietly, and with it came a question I hadn't fully considered: What is the minimum our system needs to keep everything alive?
I started the month by installing a simple water meter—just a ruler, really, marking the current depth at 3.6 inches. It feels good to have a baseline. But more importantly, I've been watching the pond itself perform like a living organism deciding its own terms. The fish are swimming in water that our waterfall alone is oxygenating, without any help from the secondary bubblers I'd been relying on. Right now, oxygen is hovering around 5 milligrams per liter. The recommendation sits at 9, nearly full saturation. There's a gap between what I thought was necessary and what's actually keeping the fish healthy—and I'm learning to trust the gap more than the guidebook.
The pond itself has become overzealous. I'm harvesting plants every few days just to give the fish room to move. There's something bittersweet about pulling out thriving plants, but abundance in the wrong proportions becomes its own problem. The eggplant is expanding beautifully, the peppers are solid, and I've got enormous strawberry foliage that's more leafy sculpture than fruit producer. But the tomatoes have stalled. They're not dying, but they're not thriving either—and honestly, I'm not sure why yet. Rather than fret, I'm planting sweet potato slips in a pot and training them up the tomato supports. It's an experiment within the experiment.
The real discovery this month is about what a waterfall actually does. I've adjusted the output flow to be more uniform, hoping to coax more oxygen into the water. Nothing changed. It turns out you need a dramatic, falling sheet of water—turbulence and aeration—not just movement. A gentle flow, no matter how steady, doesn't pull enough air into the game. This is the kind of thing you can only learn by watching.
The deeper lesson: I've been overthinking the oxygen question. A simple waterfall, a few hours of patient monitoring, and the system tells you what it needs. The fish are fine. The water keeps cycling. Things grow. Sometimes the best engineering is knowing when to step back and let the design speak for itself.
