A Better Reading Than Expected
There's a particular kind of relief that comes from re-testing something you were worried about — and discovering the news is better than you thought.
This morning's session was all about the water. Armed with a fresh pack of API 5-in-1 test strips, I wanted a second opinion on the aquaponics reservoir chemistry. The old liquid test kit had been giving readings that felt a little alarming, and I suspected it might simply be past its prime. Turns out, it was.
The new strips told a clearer story. pH is sitting right around 7 to 7.5 — a comfortable, neutral range that both the fish and the plant roots will appreciate. Nitrates and nitrites came back very low, close to negligible, which means the beneficial bacteria in the system are handling the nitrogen cycle without being overwhelmed. The GH (general hardness) and KH (carbonate hardness) landed around 60–80 ppm each — moderate, not soft, but far from the hard-water extreme the old kit had suggested.
To help the system along, I dosed in two products: API Aqua Essential, which neutralises any residual chlorine and heavy metals in tap water top-ups, and Seachem Stability, which delivers a concentrated load of nitrifying bacteria. Think of Stability as a booster shot — instead of waiting weeks for a bacterial colony to establish naturally, you're seeding it directly. The water hyacinth and lettuce floating in the tank should start seeing cleaner, more balanced conditions within a few days.
The takeaway from today: the chemistry was never as bad as the old test kit implied. The system is actually in decent shape, and now with fresh conditioners added, it has a solid foundation to build from. Sometimes the most useful garden session is the one that tells you to worry a little less.
